The Scottish Juvenile FA (SJFA) was formed in 1899 and organised the first Scottish Juvenile for the 1899-00 season. The first winners, Edinburgh’s Granton Oak Vale, were the last from the capital until 1928 as the competition became dominated by the West coast clubs particularly from Glasgow and Lanarkshire which established itself as the heartland of the Juvenile grade. In the early years of this level, it was common for some clubs labelled as ‘second class juveniles’ to organize competitions opposed to those of the SJFA. Age limits in this new grade were very liberal, but by 1921, it was decided that some order was needed and the Scottish Secondary Juvenile FA (SSJFA) was formed, this being dominated by the east coast clubs. It was initially decided that after a year, these would have an age limit of 21, but the eastern clubs carried the motion to reserve the right for a father and son to play alongside each other. Negotiations continued and, after some tinkering, the age limits were set at 27 for the First Class, and 21 for the Second. The SJFA also had a limit of 25 for a period. The SSFA also introduced the Lord Weir Cup, and ‘under age’ competition for players under 18, and this still continues today as the Scottish Under 18 Cup.

The two grades flourished and for many years the two Cup finals were prestigious affairs but by the 1960s a decline had set in. The West coast clubs were by now switching their attentions to the Secondary grade and began dominating the SSJFA competitions. The last Edinburgh club to win the Secondary Cup was Melbourne Thistle in 1969. By the 1970s the SJFA was in dwindling in both scope and importance, although it did remain strong in Tayside. Towards the late 1970s, when they were losing teams and even whole leagues, it one failed proposal was that the age limit was raised to 30 or even removed altogether. The last 'major' SJFA Cup was played in 1991, but both the competitions and the SJFA continued to a greatly lesser extent, being based in Perth and administering competitions from U-11s to U-18s.

The SSJFA was renamed the Association of Scottish Youth Football Clubs in 1985, and their Cup winners were hailed either the Scottish Youth Cup or Scottish U-21 Cup winners.

In 1999 the SJFA merged with the ASYFC and the youth division of the Scottish Amateur FA to create the Scottish Youth FA.

The Lady Darling Cup is the consolation competition for those clubs knocked out of the early stages of the Scottish Secondary Juvenile Cup. The cup was established by the Secondary Juvenile Association and first won by Glasgow St Francis Boys Club in 1933. Eastfield Heatherbell from Shotts won it 3 times in a row between 1935 and 1937 and then again in 1939. Cowdenbeath MW BC drew in the 1943 final v Renfrew Rovers at the Gymnasium in Edinburgh and then refused to travel for the replay because the SSJFA would only pay for 15 train fares. Renfrew were awarded the cup by default while Kirkcaldy Old Boys won the Cup in 1944 beating Glentyan Thistle in the final. Other Fife winners were Dunfermline United in 1970, Oakley Star 1971, and Glenrothes Strollers in 1981. Other winners include Links United, Hutcheson Vale, Edina Hibernian, Broughton Star, St Bernards ‘A’, Edinburgh Athletic and Tynecastle BC.

Juvenile football in Fife

The first Juvenile competition in Fife was probably the Dunfermline Badges in 1891-92, when Ensign beat Wallsend in the final at Lady’s Mill. Very impressed with the winners, Dunfermline Athletic used the Ensign side en bloc in their last Midland League fixture. The game was meaningless in terms of the championship, however it gave Clackmannan the opportunity to inflict Dunfermline with their record defeat, a 17-2 thrashing. Impressed by the success of the Badges tournament, Alex Campbell of Cowdenbeath’s Commercial Hotel then presented a new trophy, the Fife Juvenile Cup, for competition in 1892-93. In 1893, in a move similar to the Junior game, the Cowdenbeath Juvenile Cup was also established, and these two competitions also became the most important in the Kingdom. In 1901 the East Fife Juvenile FA was formed and they too set up their own competition.

Internationals

There were also various representative matches played, especially season 1947-48 when the Scottish Under Age XI played against the Newcastle United Nursery XI no fewer than five times, but there were no other 'full' internationals. There was then a long gap before any kind of representative games, before Scotland played against the Boys Clubs of Wales or the Ulster Juvenile FA at U16 and U18 level in the 1980s and 1990s.
