Scottish Alliance overview

Reserve football

Eight clubs Dumbarton, Clyde, Dundee United, Third Lanark, Stirling Albion, Hamilton Academical, Queens Park, St Johnstone and Arbroath - met at the SFA offices on 8 August 1956 to discuss the formation of a reserve league for second division clubs. They felt that a new league be formed to cater for them as they believed that friendly games didn't help the reserve players develop quickly enough. The first five clubs found in favour, but the last two didnt have the power to vote, so they and Queens Park reported back to their clubs to discuss the scheme further. At a subsequent meeting on 20 August 1956, six clubs formed the Scottish Alliance, with Queen's Park playing all their games away from home. The league's president was WC Hiddleston of Third Lanark, with J Scouliar of Clyde the vice-president
