Inter County and District Representative Matches
1870-date

One aspect of the game, especially
during the 1880s and 1890s, were matches between various County and district
association’s XIs. These were very
popular in the 1880s, but were in decline by the following decade. Why they
fell out of favour is not clear although the
decrease in the number of senior clubs in each county and the formation of
the various leagues around the country may have been a deciding factor. A
proposal in May 1892 to form a County Championship was rejected by the SFA
and this may have been a last ditch attempt at saving the fixtures. Below is
a list of the Inter-County matches (mainly featuring Renfrewshire) that I’ve
come across. John
Meffen has supplied details of some of Stirlingshire FA’s
matches, and also of the Falkirk & District XI. |
