In the early years of this tournament, entry appears to have been
restricted to four teams. Vale of Leven were invited to participate in the
inaugural contest, but declined the invitation. Invitations were made by the Glasgow Charity
Cup Committee (GCCC) at their discretion, but no criteria were ever
published. [Source:
Wray Vamplew, ‘Remembering Us Year After Year’: The Glasgow Charity Cup,
1876-1966 (University of Stirling, 2008)]. The first season’s contest was
a three-cornered affair involving Third Lanark, Queen’s Park, and
Rangers. |

Due to a
disagreement with the GCCC concerning possible dates for fixtures, the Scottish
League ordered Celtic, Rangers, and Third Lanark not to compete in this
tournament for this season. "In 1891, in protest at the GCCC’s refusal to
alter match dates, the newly-formed SFL insisted that Celtic, Rangers and Third
Lanark drop out of the tournament. Without these leading teams, the Charity
Cup, consisting of Airdrieonians, Partick Thistle, and Queen’s Park who played
Northern in the final, raised only £150." (Vamplew, 6).

1 Third Lanark won on the toss of a
coin (Ferrier & McElroy, 702).
2 I have followed Lunney’s claim
that Third Lanark’s Semi-final opponents were Celtic, and not Rangers, and that
Thirds won the tie by the toss of a coin. There is no trace of such a match in
Bell or Laird. Both claim that Thirds’ opponents in the Semi-final were
Rangers, but must be wrong. The New
York Times for 10th May and the Glasgow Herald for that date both confirm that Lunney is correct.

Throughout this document I have referred to Third Lanark by their more
familiar name, although early reports from the 1870s and 1880s tend to describe
them as 3rd LRV.
