Note: It appears that the Secretary’s Report to the SFA was that “Owing to various circumstances the programme proposed by the Committee was not fully carried out.” (Stewart Davidson, “A Scottish Football Review of 1877-78”, quoted in E-mail from David Ross (5^th October 2009)) The initial draw was Queen’s Park v Rangers and Third Lanark v Vale of Leven. For reasons which remain unclear Third Lanark played Rangers instead, but did so under protest, before withdrawing from the competition. Vale of Leven refused to play Rangers, but went straight through to the final. This may explain why the Scotsman Digital Archive appears to have no trace of any further matches between Round 1 and the Final.

There is no trace of such a match in Bell or Laird. Both claim that Thirds’ opponents in the Semi-final were Rangers, but must be wrong. The New York Times for 10^th May and the Glasgow Herald for that date both confirm that Lunney is correct.
