The Forfarshire Cup is competed for by Senior teams in membership of the Forfarshire Football Association. "Forfarshire" is an archaic and anglicised name for Angus which became official in the late 19th century around the time of Local Government (Scotland) Act 1889 which restructured and renamed many of Scotland's counties, however the name quickly fell into disuse and was very rarely used in everyday conversation and is non-existent today.

The Forfarshire Football Association was founded in 1883 and was comprised of 18 clubs. Twelve from Dundee, two from Arbroath and one each from the then independent towns of Broughty Ferry and Lochee. There were also clubs from Coupar Angus and Montrose. Like all the other county FAs at the time, the association immediately put up a trophy costing £35 for competition between its member clubs which was regarded like all the other county cups as prestigious as the Scottish Cup.

Out-with the wartime seasons, the competition has been played for nearly every year, although it has been left uncompleted on a number of occasions due to a lack of available dates more so since the 1970s. On a number of occasions, some games have been played up to three seasons late.

By this time Forfar Athletic and Montrose had closed down because of the Great War. The 2/7th Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders were based in Montrose and took over Montrose’s place in the Forfarshire Cup. I have yet to find the result of the semi final of Montrose – Dundee ‘A’.

The final is reported as a team made up of the 2/7th Argyll Sutherland Highlanders won the cup for Montrose against Dundee Hibernians.
